With a bow built using 24 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, the USS New York was delivered to the U.S. Navy on 21 August 2009. Its motto is “Strength through sacrifice. Never forget.” Notice its twin towers.
It is designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It has a crew of 360 and can carry up to 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by MV-22B Osprey aircraft, Landing Craft Air Cushions, and Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles (EFV).
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, Louisiana. “Those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,” recalled Navy Captain Kevin Wensing who was there. “It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.”
