This enormous American flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and composed of 6.65 acres of more than 400,000 Larkspur plants, with 4-5 flower stems each, for a total of more than 2 million flowers. It is an amazing sight with a very interesting history.
The floral flag was created by the City of Lompoc, California, in celebration of Flag Day June 14, 2002. The Lompoc Valley is a flower growers mecca and is also the location of Vandenberg AFB.
The flag was planted by the Bodger Seed Company after the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Bodger Seed Company also planted a floral flag in 1942 to honor those who served in the Armed Forces in World War II, and another floral flag was planted in 1952 to honor those who served in the Korean War. All of the flags were comprised of Red, White and Blue Larkspur flowers. John Bodger and Sons, Inc. was founded in California in 1890 and is a family owned business in its fifth generation of operation.
Following proper proportions for the American flag, each of the fifty stars is 24 feet in diameter, and each of the thirteen stripes is 30 feet wide.
